WWE Extreme Rules results: AJ Styles vs. Rusev for the WWE Championship

Surprisingly, Rusev vs. AJ Styles for the WWE Championship was the semi-main event and the Intercontinental Championship was given the main event spot.

This was a really good match. The story was that Styles was fighting through this match with back pain and Rusev had an injured left leg. Both injuries play into each man’s finisher. Late in the match, Rusev tried to go for the Accolade but his knee gave out on him. He locked it in but without as much pressure and Styles was able to get to the bottom rope.

Aiden English ripped the cover off the top turnbuckle as Rusev attempted to apply the Accolade again. Styles moved and Rusev went after him and crashed head first into the exposed turnbuckle. Styles took advantage of this and hit a springboard 450 but Rusev kicked out of the pin attempt as fans chanted “Rusev Day.”

Styles took out English at ringside and then went for the Phenomenal Foream. Styles won.
