A Mountain Dew Pitch Black match was integrated into the lineup of this year’s WWE Royal Rumble as it was the name of the contest between Bray Wyatt and LA Knight.
Going into it, no one knew what the bout would look like considering there had never been a match like it.
It saw them compete in a street fight under black light. There was sponsorship incorporated into the bout including a giant Mountain Dew logo on the canvas.
As previously reported, a Cinnamon Toast Crunch match has been hinted at for WWE WrestleMania 39. WWE CEO Nick Khan stated on Thursday’s earnings call that the company is looking to sell sponsorship in the ring whether that be on the canvas or on turnbuckles.
While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted WWE got paid a million dollars by Mountain Dew for the bout.
“Well, you know the thing is that Mountain Dew one, that was a million-dollar deal. That’s significant money if you can get deals like that. It was a really crappy match though and they kept it short. I guess Pepsi has to decide whether it’s worth it to spend a million dollars to sponsor a crappy match, maybe it is. I don’t know, on a pay-per-view that was seen by two million people,” Meltzer stated.
