WWE had plans for Awesome Kong vs. Beth Phoenix match at WrestleMania

Fans missed out on a match pitting Awesome Kong against Beth Phoenix at a WrestleMania years ago according to former WWE writer Freddie Prinze Jr.

During the latest episode of his ‘Wrestling with Freddie’ podcast, he mentioned that there was a plan in place for this match. He recalled an idea where Kong would’ve beaten Gail Kim and her next challenger would be Natalya.  After that match, Kong would attack Natalya, which would lead to Phoenix making the save. However, the match never happened because Kong left WWE.

“After the bell which brings out Beth Phoenix which is what Vince [McMahon] wanted me to work WrestleMania too and it was gonna be Beth Phoenix and Awesome Kong at WrestleMania — or this is what Stephanie [McMahon] wanted me to do.”

He then talked about what he wanted them to say in a promo class to rehearse their segment. He put over Kong for being a good talker.

“Now the story couldn’t play [out] and ended up not going because Kia ended up leaving the company…”

Kong was in WWE from 2011 through July 2012.  Kong made a name for herself in TNA Wrestling as she was a top and dominant star for the promotion from 2007-2010. She had a notable rivalry with Gail Kim that helped further women’s wrestling into what it is today.
