The build to SummerSlam got off to a hot start last week when John Cena and Roman Reigns cut promos on each other to promote their match. Fans may remember that WWE went this route for Cena’s feud with The Rock a few years ago. During that feud, they cut shoot-like promos on each other.
During the closing segment of WWE Friday Night SmackDown, Reigns declined Cena’s challenge and said that Cena came back and is just doing the same thing he’s been doing for years by coming out to the same music while wearing the same gear and cutting the same old promos.
Reigns said, “he came out here and he put on a nostalgia act. this is the same thing. He came out here, the same music, the same entrance, the same run to the ring, the same outfit, the same promo, the same insults. If I wanted that, all I had to do was search online for 2005 John Cena. It’s the same thing, over and over and over. It’s like missionary position every single night. And the Tribal Chief, the Head of the Table, we’re not interested in that…”
The original “missionary position” line is included on the “WWE on FOX” YouTube and Twitter account but has been removed on WWE’s official social media accounts.
The segment ended with Finn Balor walking out to issue a challenge. Reigns accepted but it was not said when they would wrestle. The match is likely to either happen on a future episode of SmackDown or on the September pay-per-view because Cena vs. Reigns is definitely happening at SummerSlam even though it hasn’t been made “official” in WWE storylines.
The Reigns promo being edited appears to be WWE’s decision since one would think that if FOX had an issue with it then they would have posted the edited version on their social media accounts.
