WWE realizes that changes need to happen with NXT because the perception is that they are the minor leagues in comparison to the production of AEW Dynamite.
It looks like big changes are coming in a few months. Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that there has been a lot of talk about NXT going on the road every Wednesday night in 5,000-seat arenas. Meltzer noted that WWE has inquired about running NXT shows in larger buildings for Wednesday nights.
So far, NXT has lost the ratings war to AEW Dynamite. The first week drew 891,000 viewers to AEW’s 1.409 million viewers. The second week dropped to 790,000 viewers to AEW’s 1.018 million viewers. AEW drew an additional 122,000 for the simulcast on truTV.
Although many fans would argue that wrestling on NXT has been better than what is seen on AEW, the consensus seems to be that AEW’s production with a rabid fanbase in larger arenas translates to a much more exciting show.
It will be interesting to see if the move to bigger arenas in early 2020 will lead to ratings increasing for NXT.
