We’ve written several times about the expanding WWE roster. The roster is bigger than it’s ever been and apparently, it will continue to expand.
As reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the new revenue coming in from the NBCUniversal and Fox Sports deals are going to allow WWE to do more things with the product and that includes plans to expand talent on the main roster and on the NXT side.
The ideas include to add more Performance Centers around the world and to set up more international territories, similar to what they have done with NXT UK.
Basically, this means that WWE will get even more aggressive in locking down more talent who they see as having marketing potential. It’s unclear how much this will impact companies like Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling but now, WWE can go after anyone who is a free agent that they wouldn’t have been interested in before, simply to keep them away from the independent scene.
WALTER, who is a highly-sought free agent, is one name WWE wants but he has stated that he doesn’t want to be away from home. In the past, WWE would have decided not to pursue him because they wanted wrestlers who could go on the road every week. Now, because of their expansion, they are willing to sign him to an NXT UK-type of deal that would allow him to still work for his home promotion (wXw) in Germany.
