A few months ago, WWE was teasing the split of Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose. They scrapped those plans and now it looks like they are going in a completely opposite direction.
Fans have picked up on some subtle signs that point to Rose and Deville possibly getting together as an on-screen couple on SmackDown Live.
In this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer noted that WWE is definitely doing some subtle teases with the idea being that Deville, who is gay, has the hots for Rose.
This might be one of those storylines that Vince McMahon considers “edgy.” He noted on the WWE investor conference call that there would be more edgy storylines but the product will remain PG.
These days, an LGBT storyline wouldn’t be considered edgy anywhere else except WWE but, if this is where they are going with Rose and Deville, it is nice to see more diversity on WWE programming.
During an interview with Elle Collins at Uproxx, Rose did not confirm that a romance storyline was developing but she was very open to the idea. Rose said, “I don’t have many insights to offer on that. I think there’s definitely rumors and stuff like that. But it’s also hard to say because my character is pretty sexual and pretty sassy, the way I am. So anything I do, it doesn’t really matter if it’s to Sonya or to anyone else. It’s just who my character is, so it’s hard to judge. But I guess you’re just going to have to stay tuned, right? You never know.”
Rose added, “…if there was ever to be a type of relationship with us, I’m super supportive and WWE is super supportive of inclusion and the LGBTQ community, so I think it would be awesome.”
Rose and Deville are scheduled to face the Kabuki Warriors on Tuesday night on SmackDown Live. There is some confusion because they botched their promo last week but it looks like it will be a non-title match on Tuesday and they will get a title shot if they win.
