As noted in the Smackdown spoilers, The Rock did a taped backstage segment that will air on the Smackdown 15th anniversary show. The segment was actually taped on Monday night. At the beginning of Smackdown, Stephanie McMahon talked about how The Rock was the person that came up with the term “Smackdown” and that her husband Triple H had beaten him before.
Later, during the backstage segment with The Rock, Triple H, and Stephanie, they talk about Triple H beating The Rock on the first episode of Smackdown in 1999. Then The Rock said that he gave Triple H a Rock Bottom through a table. After that they talked about different matches that they had against each other. After that then The Rock said that if they wrestled again at WrestleMania 31 then he would win.
The Rock vs. Triple H was something that was talked about for WrestleMania 30 but things didn’t pan out. The original idea for that show was Triple H vs. Steve Austin and Vince McMahon making his return as a babyface and taking control of the company after Austin won. However, Austin was said to never be on board for that angle so The Rock was the second choice. Once Rock decided not to do the match then it was decided that Vince wasn’t going to return so none of this happened.
At the end of the segment on Smackdown, both of them vowed that if they ever wrestled each other again that they’d win. They went face to face in the segment.
Another reason for Rock to wrestle at WrestleMania is the nostalgia factor. He was born 29 miles from Levi Stadium in Hayward, California. That area is also where he first started attending wrestling matches.
