WWE Is Working On A Major Match For The Money In The Bank Pay-Per-View

According to a report from PWInsider.com, a highly anticipated WWE Championship match between current champion John Cena and CM Punk is not in the immediate plans for the upcoming Money in the Bank premium live event. This update comes despite CM Punk recently taking to social media via his Instagram account to clearly state his intentions of coming for Cena’s title.

While fans have been speculating about a potential blockbuster clash between the two rivals at Money in the Bank, PWInsider, citing several WWE creative sources, states that this specific championship bout is not part of the current creative direction for the event. However, the desire within WWE to have Cena and Punk face off for the title remains strong. One source indicated to PWInsider that the company does want to schedule the bout “later this year ‘when the timing is right’,” suggesting it’s a match being preserved for a potentially larger stage or when storyline elements better align.

CM Punk’s social media post had fueled significant discussion among fans, as he made it clear he was targeting the WWE Championship, now held by John Cena after his record-breaking 17th world title win at WrestleMania 41. Punk’s declaration naturally pointed towards a potential challenge at the next available major event, Money in the Bank.

With the Cena vs. Punk singles match for the title seemingly on hold for Money in the Bank, PWInsider also reported on alternative creative discussions for John Cena at the event. There is a belief within WWE creative circles that popular musician Travis Scott will be available for the Money in the Bank PLE. Scott has previously been involved in WWE programming, notably at WrestleMania 41 where he assisted John Cena in his match against Cody Rhodes.

Given Scott’s potential availability, pitches have reportedly been made for him and John Cena to team up at Money in the Bank. The proposed match could be a standard tag team encounter or a six-man tag team match of some sort, allowing WWE to leverage Scott’s mainstream celebrity appeal for the event. Travis Scott has also reportedly been training intermittently with WWE Hall of Famer Booker T in Texas, indicating a continued interest in being involved in a physical capacity.

If a tag team match featuring Cena and Scott materializes, the question of their opponents arises. While nothing is confirmed, one would think former Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes would be a logical choice to be on the opposing side, potentially continuing storylines stemming from WrestleMania 41 where Rhodes lost the title to Cena.

John Cena’s current reign as Undisputed WWE Champion is his historic 17th world championship, and he has indicated that 2025 will be part of his farewell tour, making each of his championship defenses and appearances highly significant.
