WWE Just Dropped A Major Tease For The Return Of AJ Lee

At the conclusion of the WWE Clash in Paris Premium Live Event, a series of events involving Becky Lynch, her husband Seth Rollins, and CM Punk has ignited speculation that Punk’s wife, AJ Lee, could be making a return to the company. The teases came in multiple forms, including on-air commentary and a direct gesture from Punk himself.

The main event of the show saw Seth Rollins defend his World Heavyweight Championship against CM Punk, Jey Uso, and LA Knight in a Fatal Four-Way match. The finish of the match occurred when Becky Lynch, who was not involved in the bout, came to the ring and delivered a low blow to CM Punk. This allowed her husband, Seth Rollins, to capitalize on the opening and secure the pinfall to retain his championship.

Following the event, the official WWE post-show panel discussed the controversial finish. During the analysis, WWE Superstar Big E directly addressed the implication of Lynch’s interference. In a pointed comment, Big E stated, “This man CM Punk has got a wife too.”

The speculation was further fueled by CM Punk’s actions as he was leaving the ring area. After the post-match chaos, Punk spotted a fan in the crowd holding a sign that read “AJ Lee.” Punk took the sign from the fan and held it up for the cameras to see before making his way to the back.

AJ Lee, a three-time WWE Divas Champion, was one of the most popular and influential female performers of her era, known for both her in-ring ability and her promo skills. She was a central figure in the women’s division in the years leading up to the “Women’s Revolution” and was often praised for her character work.

Lee retired from professional wrestling in April 2015. The official reason cited for her retirement was permanent damage to her cervical spine. Her departure also came at a time when her husband, CM Punk, was in the midst of a contentious legal battle with WWE.

Since leaving the ring, Lee has focused on a career as a writer and mental health advocate. Her 2017 memoir, Crazy Is My Superpower: How I Triumphed by Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts, and Breaking the Rules, became a New York Times Best Seller. In the book, she was open about her diagnosis with bipolar disorder, and she has since become a prominent advocate for mental health awareness.

In 2021, Lee made a brief return to the professional wrestling business, but not in an in-ring capacity. She joined the rebooted WOW – Women of Wrestling promotion as an executive producer and color commentator, a role she held for the show’s single season.

Whenever asked about a potential in-ring return in past interviews, Lee has consistently cited her neck injury as the primary reason why it is unlikely. While often using the “never say never” phrase common among wrestlers, she has always maintained that the physical risks associated with her permanent spinal damage are too great to consider a full-time return to wrestling.

CM Punk has echoed these sentiments in his own interviews over the years when asked about his wife’s potential return. He has consistently stated that while he would support any decision she makes, her neck injury is a serious and legitimate barrier to her competing again, and that her passions have shifted toward her writing and advocacy work.

While both Lee and Punk have been clear about the physical limitations preventing an in-ring comeback, the deliberate and multi-layered teases by WWE following a major international event have given fans significant reason to believe that AJ Lee could be on her way back to the company in some capacity, potentially to even the odds for her husband against Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch.
