WWE Legend Celebrates His 82nd Birthday On January 1st

WWE Hall of Famer Jimmy Hart, affectionately known to millions of fans as “The Mouth of the South,” is celebrating his 82nd birthday today, January 1.

While decades have passed since he first terrorized Memphis wrestling and patrolled the ringside areas of the WWF and WCW, Hart remains a medical marvel to many in the industry. As noted by fans and insiders alike, the legendary manager continues to defy the aging process, maintaining the same high energy and youthful appearance he sported over twenty years ago. From the Charts to the Ring

Before he ever picked up his trademark megaphone, Hart was a legitimate rock star. He gained fame in the 1960s as a vocalist for the band The Gentrys, scoring a million-selling hit with “Keep on Dancing” in 1965. His transition to professional wrestling began in his hometown of Memphis, where he was brought in by former high school classmate Jerry “The King” Lawler.

Initially part of Lawler’s circle, Hart famously turned on “The King” to create “The First Family of Wrestling,” a stable of heels designed to destroy Lawler, sparking one of the hottest feuds in territory history. This run included his involvement in the legendary Andy Kaufman vs. Jerry Lawler program, earning Hart national headlines.

A Hall of Fame Management Career

Hart joined the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) in 1985, where his colorful suits and rapid-fire promos made him an instant icon. He managed a “who’s who” of wrestling legends, guiding The Hart Foundation (Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart), Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, and The Honky Tonk Man to championship gold.

He notably managed The Honky Tonk Man during his record-breaking 15-month reign as Intercontinental Champion. Hart was also instrumental in the careers of The Nasty Boys, Money Inc. (Ted DiBiase and IRS), and Dino Bravo. His success continued in WCW, where he managed Hulk Hogan and served as a key figure in The Dungeon of Doom.

The Musical Mastermind

While fans remember him for his ringside antics, Hart’s contributions behind the scenes were just as impactful. Utilizing his musical background, he composed some of the most iconic entrance themes in wrestling history.

His discography includes:

  • “Sexy Boy”: The theme for Shawn Michaels, which is still used today.
  • “Common Man Boogie”: The infectious theme for Dusty Rhodes.
  • nWo Wolfpac Theme: A staple of the late 90s WCW product.
  • “Cool, Cocky, Bad”: The Honky Tonk Man’s theme, which Hart also performed.

A Living Legend

Hart was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005. Today, he remains active on the convention circuit and makes occasional WWE appearances. Happy Birthday to “The Mouth of the South!”
