WWE Legend Says Calling Wrestling “fake” Is A Trigger For Wrestlers

D-Von Dudley said calling wrestling “fake” is a trigger for wrestlers and described a moment during his divorce proceedings where a court official called it “the fake stuff” and he had to stop himself from reacting, speaking in an interview with DJ Vlad.

“The guy who was in charge of it goes, ‘You mean the fake stuff?’ And I just went, isn’t he 53, what is this, an old man type of wrestling?” D-Von said. “I’m like, D-Von, don’t you open your mouth. You’re gonna lose everything. Don’t do it. Just let it go. Act like he never said it.”

D-Von said the phrase is a universal trigger for wrestlers. “Now you want to fight. Now it’s worth spending the night in jail. Now it’s worth dropping 10 to 15,000 just to knock him out. Now it’s worth it. You get that all the time from the wrestlers,” he said.

When asked if any wrestler had ever gone into business for themselves and changed the planned outcome of a match under Vince McMahon, D-Von said he had never heard of it happening in 33 years. “Even people that hate him never did that,” D-Von said.

D-Von addressed the Montreal Screwjob: “You can’t say somebody screwed Bret. Vince screwed Bret,” D-Von said.

D-Von said McMahon was the most hated wrestler during the Attitude Era despite not actually being a wrestler. He said McMahon once acknowledged that his father would have disapproved of him becoming an on-screen character. “His father would have been like, ‘Vinnie, what are you doing? You don’t do that.’ But it worked,” D-Von said. “Sometimes you got to go against the rules. Sometimes you have to just go with it. And sometimes you hit a home run.”
