WWE No Mercy results: AJ Styles vs. John Cena vs. Dean Ambrose (WWE Championship)

Due to heavy competition from the Presidential Debate and Sunday Night Football, WWE made the call to move the World Championship Match between AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose and John Cena to the beginning of the WWE No Mercy pay-per-view so, for the first time that I can recall, the main event kicked off a PPV. The big story going into this match was whether Cena could tie Ric Flair’s record 16 championship reigns.

As expected, they had a great match and it was a nice way to kick off the show. If you told me that Styles is the best in-ring performer in the business today then I would not disagree with you. Styles tapped but both Ambrose and Cena had a submission hold on him at the same time so the match continued. About a minute later, Ambrose hit Dirty Deeds on Cena but Styles pulled the referee out of the ring. Mauro Ranallo stressed that there were no DQ’s and no count outs in the match. Cena hit an AA but was then nailed with chair shots by Styles and that allowed Styles to get the pin.

I believe Cena is taking some more time off to film the second season of FOX’s American Grit and it’s too soon to put the title back on Ambrose so this result makes sense. Plus, Styles is great in his role as the cocky arrogant champion claiming to be “the face that runs the place.”
