WWE No Mercy results: John Cena vs. Roman Reigns

WWE

WWE

John Cena vs. Roman Reigns was hyped as a WrestleMania-caliber match and the goal was to elevate Roman Reigns as a way to give more credibility in the eyes of fans. The other goal was to get as many people signed up to the WWE Network this month. They are offering another 3-month trial to new subscribers. If you subscribe then you will also get the Hell in a Cell and TLC PPV's for free.

Here are some of the highlights from the match (note: this was written in real-time):

There was a "you both suck" chant during the first few seconds of the match. The first several minutes consisted of mostly offense from Reigns. Cena got in a few short flurries of offense but then Reigns would cut him down. Later, Cena was able to lock in the STF but Reigns powered out of it and then powerbombed him. About a minute later, Cena was able to hit the Attitude Adjustment but Reigns barely kicked out. Later, Cena hit an AA off the top rope but Reigns kicked out. Cena realized that he needed to take things to the next level so he set up Reigns for an AA on the announcer's table but Reigns turned thing around and speared Cena from one table to another. Back in the ring, Cena hit another pair of AA's (the fourth AA of the match) and then went for the pin but Reigns kicked out and the crowd was shocked. Cena got up with a look of disbelief on his face and Reigns caught him with a superman punch and then pinned him. Incredible match. After the match, Cena hoisted Reigns' arm in the air to put over. They cut back to Cena in the ring as fans clapped and cheered for him. Cena then bowed and then waived at the crowd as they chanted "thank you, Cena."

The idea behind this match was to put over Reigns because they have big plans for him (click here to read what those plans are). It'll be interesting to see what is next for Cena. He was on Chris Jericho's podcast last week and admitted that he can no longer wrestle full-time, in part, because he is banged up from the neverending schedule over the last decade or so.

The WWE TLC pay-per-view is up next for the Raw brand and there is a huge reunion planned for that show. We won't spoil it here but you can click here if you want to read more.
