A new report has shed light on an evolving recruitment strategy within WWE, indicating that the company is becoming “more open-minded” in its search for the next generation of superstars.
A Shift In Talent Recruitment Philosophy
According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the thoughts on talent tryouts within WWE are shifting. The report notes that while in the past the focus was primarily on Division I college athletes in their early-to-mid-20s, the company is now looking at a wider range of candidates.
SummerSlam Tryouts To Feature A Diverse Mix
This new, more open-minded approach will reportedly be on display at the next major set of tryouts during SummerSlam week. Meltzer reports that the upcoming tryouts “will be a mix of Division I athletes, models, independent wrestlers and they are inviting some people in their early 30s.” The inclusion of experienced independent wrestlers and older athletes is a notable change from the primary focus of the last few years.
The reported shift to once again embrace experienced independent talent aligns with the recent success of several stars who made their name outside of WWE. Fightful previously reported that WWE is slated to hold tryouts for experienced independent wrestlers. For more on that, click here.
