Matt Cardona has found a ton of success outside of the WWE bubble as a made guy on the independent circle, with him appearing for various promotions, including ROH and GCW.
Cardona is slated to challenge Chris Jericho for the ROH World Heavyweight Title at Final Battle on December 20th, about a month before he wrestles in a top match at The People vs. GCW. Both events take place at the Hammerstein Ballroom.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that “There also was an idea at one point for Cardona & Chelsea Green vs. Joey Janela & Megan Bayne on that show, but WWE wouldn’t go for it.” It’s unclear why WWE rejected the idea for the January 19th show, as WWE stars have previously wrestled at GCW Bloodsport events.
Cardona has made a few appearances on AEW TV in the lead-up to his match with Jericho. This comes after AEW pulled Ricky Starks from upcoming GCW events, including a match with Cardona after Effy made comments about AEW and Tony Khan’s father, Shad Khan. The current lineup for the January 19th GCW show can be seen below:
