As many of you saw on Friday night, the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship will be defended at WrestleMania in a Six-Pack Challenge Match with Bayley defending against Tamina, Dana Brooke, Lacey Evans, Naomi and Sasha Banks. However, that was not the original plan.
Dave Meltzer discussed the original plans for the SmackDown Women’s Championship on Wrestling Observer Radio and he noted that it was supposed to be Sasha Banks vs. Bayley in a singles match but the match was pushed to a later date. The change was made before the recent changes to the show.
“The gimmick is that Bayley is all mad about a six-way,” Meltzer said. But Sasha, who is supposed to be Bayley’s best friend, was mad until her name was announced in the match.”
Meltzer continued, “The company wanted to do Bayley and Sasha at WrestleMania and to their credit, given that there was no time to build it up … literally, this came up a week or two ago.”
Meltzer said that the Six-Pack Challenge will be the start of their fend. “They kind of got it pushed with ‘we’ll do the six-way which will be the start [of the feud] and then we’ll do the singles match when it’s not so rushed.”
The planned Banks vs. Bayley basically means that someone will be turning face when their feud kicks off. It is not clear who will turn but it seems early to turn Bayley since she’s only been a heel for a few months.
