WWE Superstar Gunther recently appeared on The Morning Shift on 92.9 The Game to discuss his professional philosophy, Monday Night Raw, and his perspective on the current state of the wrestling industry.
Philosophical Approach to Wrestling
Gunther provided insight into his in-ring persona, suggesting that his character aligns closely with his personal reality. He characterized himself as an old soul
who prioritizes professional fundamentals over modern production flourishes.
I’m an old soul. I like—I listen to old music, I watch older movies,
Gunther stated. In a time where our audience mostly has TikTok brain and has the attention span of a two-year-old, I love to be the disruptor that does not play along with that trend… I focus on the fundamentals, I focus on what this business and professional wrestling is about. It’s proper technique, it’s proper basics, it’s authenticity
.
Reflections on Career Path and Influences
Gunther attributed his success to his refusal to follow the most popular routes
in professional wrestling. He noted that he was primarily influenced by the peers he worked with while developing his skills in Europe and the independent circuit.
I was never too heavily influenced by WWE at the time or something like that. It was mostly the guys I worked with, like Timothy Thatcher… Daisuke Sekimoto, Zack Sabre Jr., obviously Ludwig Kaiser,
he explained. I’m very proud of that—that I kind of like did it my own way. I didn’t follow the most popular routes that people usually go
.
The AJ Styles Tribute and Michael Cole
Addressing his reputation as a career killer,
Gunther spoke regarding performers who overstay their welcome
. He specifically commented on veteran announcer Michael Cole, noting, I look at him and I just go like, ‘Go home, man. You’ve done your part. Time’
.
Regarding the scheduled tribute for AJ Styles happening tonight on Raw, Gunther expressed skepticism about the emotional nature of the event. I wish everybody would just grow up and be able to move on in life and to realize when it’s time to go and just move on,
he said. When asked if he intended to interrupt the ceremony, Gunther noted, I don’t know what I’m doing with it now… it’s also a bit tempting to try and ruin that. So, we’ll see
