Despite the latest reports on the coronavirus spreading into the Tampa area, WWE is continuing with plans for WrestleMania 36.
WWE issued a statement to ESPN: “The health and safety of our fans, performers and employees are our top priorities and we are monitoring the situation closely with our partners and government officials in Tampa Bay.”
The statement continued: “We remain committed to hosting WrestleMania at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday, April 5, and like other entertainment properties in the U.S., there are currently no plans to cancel or postpone our upcoming events.”
At least two coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the Tampa Bay area and there is concern that others may have been infected but not yet reported with hundreds of others being monitored.
Sporting events in some countries, including New Japan Pro Wrestling shows, have been postponed due to the outbreak. At this time, there are no large events that have been canceled in the United States. WrestleMania typically draws a large number of fans from several states and countries for wrestling’s biggest weekend of the year. Fans will also be in town for surrounding events being hosted by other promotions like WrestleCon and Gamechanger Wrestling, among others.
The coronavirus can be spread through coughing and sneezing and by touching an infected surface. Everyone is advised to wash their hands and keep away from touching surfaces and avoiding contact with anyone who is sick.
Prior to Monday’s episode of Raw, WWE held a talent meeting to address the coronavirus concerns.
