WWE Is Still Planning WrestleMania Match For AJ Lee

AJ Lee vs. Becky Lynch for the Women’s Intercontinental Championship is reportedly scheduled for WrestleMania 42. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the match has been on the books and, at last check, remains part of the lineup for the biggest show of the year.

Dave Meltzer addressed AJ Lee’s absence from the recent Royal Rumble, noting that her participation wasn’t necessary for the creative direction. Lee hasn’t wrestled since November when she competed in the women’s WarGames match.

“Lynch vs. AJ Lee for the IC title had been scheduled on the show and at last word was still scheduled,” Meltzer wrote. “Lee wasn’t in the Rumble, but it would have served no purpose for her to be in it.”

A Shift In Focus

The report also highlighted a shift in the landscape of the women’s division. Meltzer observed that the tag team division appears to be taking precedence over the singles titles, with major stars like Rhea Ripley, IYO SKY, Charlotte Flair, and The Bella Twins all occupied in tag team storylines. This has resulted in a lack of depth for the singles championships.

“With Ripley & Sky, the women’s tag title division is clearly ahead of both singles titles,” Meltzer stated. “And the best known of the women’s stars, Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss, Nia Jax (with Lash Legend), Bayley (with Lyra Valkyria) and The Bella Twins are all in that direction leaving the ranks of singles challengers very thin.”
