The partnership between The Miz and Carmelo Hayes concluded on tonight’s episode of WWE SmackDown, which featured a backstage confrontation and a physical attack later in the show.
Early in the broadcast, The Miz was shown confronting Carmelo Hayes backstage about not having his back during last week’s show. Hayes responded by ending their partnership, stating that he was done having Miz’s back because Miz was “always in his way.” Hayes said that “they were done” and told Miz that he was “being nice about it because normally he shoots first”.
Later in the evening, Carmelo Hayes made his entrance to answer Sami Zayn’s United States Championship Open Challenge. He stated that “he doesn’t have anybody holding him back”. Before Hayes could get to the ring, The Miz attacked him from behind and performed a Skull Crushing Finale. The attack resulted in Aleister Black accepting the open challenge instead.
In the main event of the evening, the team of Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton faced The Vision’s Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker. The match concluded when Seth Rollins interfered, delivering a Stomp to Orton while Paul Heyman distracted the referee. This allowed Bronson Reed to hit a Tsunami splash for the victory. After the match, Rollins attempted to attack Rhodes, but Rhodes countered with a CrossRhodes as the show concluded.
The United States Championship match saw Sami Zayn retain his title against Aleister Black. The finish occurred when Damian Priest appeared at ringside, providing a distraction that allowed Zayn to hit a Heluva Kick and a Blue Thunder Bomb for the win. After the match, Priest attacked Black, putting him through the announce table with a Razor’s Edge and challenging him to a Last Man Standing match for next week’s show.
In the women’s division, a contract signing for the Crown Jewel Champion vs. Champion match between Tiffany Stratton and Stephanie Vaquer was interrupted. Guilia and Kiana James attacked Stratton before James made a “business proposal” for Vaquer to sign with her as representation. Stratton and Vaquer fought off the attackers, and a tag team match pitting the two pairs against each other was announced for next week.
In other tag team action, the team of Sol Ruca and Zaria defeated Chelsea Green and Alba Fyre, while Je’Von Evans and Rey Fenix were victorious over Los Garzas (Angel and Berto).
The show opened with a segment where Paul Heyman confronted Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton before their main event match, stating their partnership would not last and calling it a “prophecy”.
Backstage segments also featured Jacob Fatu discussing Drew McIntyre, Solo Sikoa speaking on a “missing piece” of his family, and The Street Profits responding to a message from the Wyatt Sicks.
