There wait is almost over.
The famous Bret Hart vs. Tom Magee match that took place just prior to a Wrestling Challenge TV taping will finally air on television this Monday night.
WWE did not have a copy of the tape in their library but they were able to get it from Bret Hart’s collection. The only other person who has a copy of the tape is Dave Meltzer but it’s in a storage bin and he does not know if it has been preserved so thankfully, they were able to get the copy from Hart. WWE has announced that the match will air on the WWE Network immediately after Monday Night Raw.
Why have fans wanted to see this match? This is the match that made Vince McMahon think he had the next big star on his hands. McMahon watched the match and felt that Magee would be the person to replace Hulk Hogan as the top star. Magee continued to wrestle at some live events and dark matches and it eventually became clear that he did not have the charisma and in-ring ability to get over as the company’s biggest star. McMahon later realized that it was Hart who was responsible for covering Magee’s flaws and making him look much better than he was. Ironically, Hart ended up being Hogan’s replacement in the early 90s.
WWE’s decision to air this match on Monday is interesting and some might say that they are undercutting the Starrcast II convention where Hart and Magee are scheduled to do a Q&A. There will also be a screening of the match at the Q&A.
