WWE WrestleMania 37 (night 1) results: live coverage

We are live with ongoing coverage of WWE WrestleMania 37. The Kickoff show on Peacock starts at 7 pm eastern. There will be no matches on the Kickoff show so the in-ring action won’t start until the main broadcast at 8 pm eastern.

Note: The severe thunderstorms have passed and WWE plans to start the show on time.

The show began with a speech from Vince McMahon with the entire roster standing on the stage behind him. Vince thanked the fans and welcomed them to WrestleMania. Bebe Rexha sang God Bless America.

There was a 35 minute delay because of bad weather. The show finally got started with the hosts Titus O’Neil and Hulk Hogan.

Here is the card for night 1:

WWE Championship
Bobby Lashley vs. Drew McIntyre

They started out fighting around ringside for the first couple of minutes before settling into back-and-forth wrestling in the ring. There was a close near fall about 15 minutes in after Lashley did a version of a chokeslam on McIntyre.

McIntyre fought back and went for a Claymore kick but Lashley picked him up and slammed him but McIntyre no sold and did a kick up to his feet. McIntyre hit three consecutive future shocks but Lashley kicked out of the pin attempt. Moments later, Lashley went outside of the ring but McIntyre hit him with a swanton from inside of the ring to ringside. McIntyre also locked in a Kimura submission but Lashley made it to the bottom rope. McIntyre went for the Claymore but he missed after being distracted by MVP. Lashley took advantage and he applied the Hurt Lock full nelson submission. McIntyre got back up to his feet and use tried to push off but Lashley refused to let go of the hold.

The referee called the match because McIntyre passed out.

Backstage, Bayley interrupted the NWO to talk about her “Ding Dong, Hello!” talk show. They snubbed her at first but then eventually gave her the too sweet sign.

Tag Team Turmoil Match – winner will face Women’s Tag Team Champions on Night 2
Dana Brooke and Mandy Rose vs. Lana and Naomi vs. Natalya and Tamina vs. Liv Morgan and Ruby Riott vs. Carmella and Billie kay

Naomi and Lana started the match against Billie Kay and Carmella. Kay pinned Naomi so her team was eliminated. Liv Morgan and Ruby Riott (with new gear) were up next. Riott pinned Kay. Carmella was not happy about this and she kicked Riott in the face. Mandy Rose slipped during her entrance. Brooke was pinned by Morgan and the ring announcer had to correct himself after incorrectly saying that Brooke won. Up next was Natalya and Tamina. Late in the match, Natayla and Tamina hit a Hart Attack and Natalya was about to lock in the sharpshooter but Natalya backed off so Tamina could hit the Superfly splash off the top. Natalya and Tamina will challenge for the titles tomorrow night.

Order of eliminations:

– Naomi and Lana eliminated by Billie Kay and Carmella.
– Billie Kay and Carmella eliminated by Ruby Riott and Liv Morgan.
– Dana Brooke and Mandy Rose eliminated by Liv Morgan and Ruby Riott.
– Natalya and Tamina defeated Liv Morgan and Ruby Riott

Cesaro vs. Seth Rollins

Cesaro started out by charging at Rollins with an uppercut. Cesaro was on offense for the first minute until Rollins reversed at an attempted gutwrench suplex off the top rope. Rollins hit a superplex into a Falcon Arrow for the first close near fall of the night. Cesaro tried for the swing a few times but Rollins countered out of it.

Cesaro was finally able to swing Rollins 9 times until his bad arm forced him to let go. Rollins took over on offense, including hitting a corkscrew splash. Cesaro came back and hit the neutralizer and almost pinned Rollins. Cesaro tried another neutralizer but Rollins countered into the Pedigree and a pin attempt, which Cesaro kicked out of. Rollins hit Cesaro in the back of the neck with a forearm and then he followed with a kick to the back of the neck. Rollins went for the stomp but Cesaro nailed him with an uppercut. Cesaro then did an airplane spin with no hands. He followed up by swinging Rollins 22 times to break his record. Cesaro then hit the neutralizer and he pinned Rollins to win the match.

WWE Raw Tag Team Championship
The New Day (Champions) vs. AJ Styles and Omos

Omos was about to start the match against Kingston but they changed their minds and Styles started the match for his team. They kept teasing a tag to Omos but Woods and Kingston kept him away from the corner.

About 10 minutes into the match, Styles was finally about to tag out to Omos, who got a big pop. Woods tried moves on him but Omos kept no selling. Omos basically destroyed Kingston and Woods, Styles hit a Phenomenal Forearm off the top of Omos’ shoulders and the Omos grabbed Kingston by the neck and then hit a tree chokeslam. Omos pinned Kingston with one foot.

Steel Cage Match
Braun Strowman vs. Shane McMahon

Jerry “The King” Lawler was the guest commentator for this match. Lawler said this match would be about “brains over Braun.”

Elias and Jaxson Ryker attacked Strowman with chairs to the leg before Strowman could get inside the cage. They handed the chair to McMahon so he could use it as the match got started. McMahon had the advantage in the early part of the match because of Strowman favoring his leg and being unable to move around too well. McMahon ripped a piece of metal off the top of the cage so he could use as a weapon.

McMahon tried to escape but Strowman caught up to him and he law darted him several times into the side of the cage. Strowman’s back leg eventually gave out and that allowed McMahon to take over. McMahon hit a coast-to-coast dropkick that took him from one turnbuckle to the other. Meanwhile, Ryker and Elias climbed up so they could help McMahon over the cage but Strowman threw himself into the cage to knock off Elias and Ryker. McMahon was knocked back into the ring.

McMahon tried to climb up again but Strowman went up behind him. McMahon knocked off Strowman by hitting him in the head with a toolbox. McMahon climbed over the cage but Strowman jumped up and grabbed McMahon’s hand through the cage. Strowman ripped the steel of the cage so he could bring McMahon back in the ring.

Strowman then set himself and McMahon up on top of the cage so he could toss McMahon off the top. Strowman then went into the ring. Strowman pinned McMahon after hitting the running powerslam.

They introduced the 2020 WWE Hall Of Fame inductees.

Bad Bunny and Damian Priest vs. The Miz and John Morrison

The Miz and Morrison’s entrance included people dressed as rabbits walking out to the ring. For Bunny’s entrance, they showed him arriving to the stadium on a large Walmart size truck. The truck was driven into the arena with him on top as fireworks were set up in the sky.

After The Miz called him out, Bunny started the match. Bunny punched Miz in the face after Miz taunted him. Bunny hit some punches to the body and then he followed up with a double leg takedown. Miz took over with shots to the back. Bunny hit Miz with a Ricky Steamboat arm drag and a drop toe hold and a spinning toe hold into a pin attempt. Bunny hit a spinning hurricanrana on Miz and also hit moves on Morrison when he tagged in.

Miz and Morrison were finally able to get the advantage on Bunny after a double team. Bunny took a beating from Miz for the next few minutes as Booker (on commentary) urged him to get to his corner to make the tag. Morrison talked trash to Booker T and he did a spinaroonie to mock him. Bunny was finally able to hit a flurry of offense that included a jumping DDT off the second rope. Priest eventually tagged in. Late in the match, Bunny and Priest both his Falcon Arrow on Miz and Morrison at the same time. Priest then did a dive over the top rope. Bunny then did a dive off the top rope onto Miz and Morrison at ringside. Priest went for a move but Miz hit the Skull Crushing Finale but Bunny broke up the pin attempt.

Bunny hit Morrison with a Canadian Destroyer on the floor at ringside. In the ring, Priest put Miz on his back and and Bunny did a crossbody off the top.

WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship
Sasha Banks (Champion) vs. Bianca Belair

Belair tried to hold back tears at the start of the match as the fan gave both women a standing ovation. Michael Cole noted that this is the first time two black women have headlined WrestleMania.

The first big move of the match was a suicide dive through the ropes onto Belair. Belair caught her and pressed over her head while walking up the steps and tossing her in the ring. Minutes later, Belair yanked Banks into the steel post. Banks then tried a double knee but Belair moved and Banks crashed into the barricade.

Banks tried to make a comeback but Belair hit clotheslines a dropkick, a standing shooting star press, and a spear in the corner of the ring. Banks tried again to fight back but Belair countered and she slammed Banks face first on the mat. Belair went for a 450 moonsault off the top but Banks got her knees up. Belair also hit two consecutive powerbombs but Banks countered the third one with a facebuster.

Banks hit a splash but Belair kicked out of the pin attempt. Banks then shoved Belair into the steel steps. Back in the ring, Banks locked in the Banks Statement but Belair was able to roll through to the bottom rope. Belair had a close near fall when she hit a 450 splash off the top rope. Belair won the match after hitting the KOD.
