The main event for the inaugural WWE Wrestlepalooza premium live event has been officially confirmed. During an appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter, announcer Joe Tessitore announced that a singles match between John Cena and Brock Lesnar will headline the show.
The announcement on ESPN’s flagship sports news program is a clear sign of the new synergy between WWE and its new broadcast partner. Wrestlepalooza will be the first WWE premium live event to air exclusively on ESPN’s new direct-to-consumer streaming service, and a main event of this caliber is a fitting way to kick off the new era. The feud between the two legends has been the top story on Friday Night SmackDown for the past month.
The rivalry was reignited at the SummerSlam premium live event on August 3, when Lesnar made his shocking return to WWE after a two-year absence and attacked John Cena. This will be the first one-on-one match between the stars in several years.
The match is a key stop on John Cena’s ongoing retirement tour, which is set to conclude in December. A victory over “The Beast Incarnate” would be a notable moment in the final chapter of his career. The blockbuster main event joins an already loaded card for the Indianapolis show.
The event is also scheduled to feature a historic mixed tag team match pitting CM Punk and the returning AJ Lee against Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch. A new Women’s World Champion will also be crowned as IYO SKY takes on Stephanie Vaquer, and the reunited Usos will look for revenge against The Vision’s Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker.
