WWE Raw star Bianca Belair appeared on The Bellas podcast this week to promote her match with Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch at WrestleMania.
Bianca talked about how Mark Henry discovered her:
“Growing up, I was into all types of sports,” Belair said. “I ran track. I did gymnastics, tumbling, a little soccer here and there, but my main thing was track and field. I was a collegiate hurdler. I went to three universities. I went all around the place. I was an All-SCC collegiate hurdler. I wanted to go to the Olympics and run track, but things didn’t work out that way. After I finished college, I really missed that competitive atmosphere because I’ve been an athlete my entire life. I found CrossFit and Powerlifting. I went through a tough time in college trying to figure out who I am as a person.
With CrossFit, I was just going to have fun and find the little girl in me. I started going out there to just have fun. I competed for so long where it was all about performance and I wasn’t having fun. So with CrossFit, I was making my own outfits. I was going out there in sequins and tutus and big bows. I was grabbing the microphone and talking to the audience. I was wearing entrance pieces, taking them off, and doing cartwheels and lifting weights, and I got a lot of attention. So Mark Henry saw me online and said, ‘Have you ever thought about being a WWE Superstar because you’re basically wearing gear. You’re grabbing a microphone and cutting promos and don’t even know it. You’re wearing entrance pieces and you know how to captivate the crowd.” I was like, ‘No I never thought of it.’ I thought it was a fake account of Mark Henry until I realized it was really him. He said, ‘I can get you a tryout, but I can’t get them to hire you. Just go be yourself.’ It took me two tryouts and I made it to WWE. It’s amazing because I never imagined myself being a WWE Superstar, and now I can’t imagine doing anything other than what I’m doing now. It’s amazing finally feeling like you’re walking in your purpose.”
Bianca on how she met Montez Ford:
“We met in NXT. It was definitely love at first sight for me. He was in NXT for about a year when I came. I saw him in April when I first started. I remember seeing him and I said to one of my friends, ‘That’s a beautiful man. Keep him away from me.’ (they laugh). He ended up getting injured and went away for a couple months. One of the girls had a dinner where we all met up to get to know each other and hang out. He walked through the door at this sushi restaurant. I was like, ‘He’s here. I’m going after him.’ So I went after him and I got him. We never spent a day away from each other after that day. Then we moved into an apartment together. A year later we were engaged, and then a year later, we were married. It’s like, when you know, you know, and I’ve never experienced that before, but when I saw him, I knew.”
