Following the events of WWE Survivor Series: WarGames, the picture for WrestleMania 42 has reportedly come into sharp focus. The main event of the Premium Live Event at Petco Park saw a chaotic finish to the Men’s WarGames match, which has set the stage for the top matches at the biggest show of the year.
According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, the current plan for the two World Title matches at WrestleMania 42 are WWE Champion Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns III and World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk vs. Bron Breakker. These directions were explicitly set up by the finish of the WarGames match and the post-match interactions.
In the closing moments of the show, Bron Breakker pinned CM Punk to win the match for his team. Post-match, Roman Reigns told Cody Rhodes that it was the last time they would ever team together, signaling a renewed rivalry. Meltzer noted that the booking was designed to make the WrestleMania card obvious.
“Punk getting pinned. That finish was there…it was there to tell the story. The story is, like I said the other day, this whole thing when we come out of this match, the idea was, we’re supposed to know WrestleMania, which is Cody and Roman and Punk and Bron Breakker are the championship matches. So that’s what was there for.”
Regarding the third encounter between Rhodes and Reigns, Bryan Alvarez questioned the decision by noting that Reigns and Cody have worked at Mania twice before. Meltzer confirmed that this is the direction WWE is heading.
“That’s the plan as of today, yeah. It’s a rubber match. He [Bron] pinned CM Punk, the world champion, so he deserves a championship match. Just basic old school booking. That’s what it was there for. Did you see Cody and Roman at the end? It was very clear.”
