Zelina Vega recently captured her first singles title in WWE, winning the newly reinstated Women’s United States Championship. However, she has now revealed that the historic victory was a last-minute decision, with the company informing her of the plan only an hour before the show began.
A Last-Minute Title Change
On Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Vega shared the story of her championship win over Chelsea Green on an episode of Friday Night SmackDown. She explained that the decision was so “spur of the moment” that WWE didn’t even have her custom championship side plates prepared.
“They told me maybe, like, an hour or so before the show started… I just assumed that she was going over and that’s how it was gonna go, until a producer pulled me aside. He’s like, ‘Hey, so by the way,’ and I’m like, ‘No, no.’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah.’… It didn’t register. And then by the time it did, I was already holding it, so I was like, Oh God, they didn’t have my side plates ready, like it wasn’t planned, like it was. So I think it was very spur of the moment for them too.”
“A Much More Ruthless Side Of Me”
Despite the milestone victory, Vega also expressed some creative frustration. She stated that she feels “held down” as a babyface and is eager to show a more “ruthless side.” She believes WWE may be hesitant to give her a live microphone because they are “afraid” of what she might say.
“A much more ruthless side of me that I feel like has been wanting to come out for a while… I feel like she’s been held down for quite a bit, you know, especially like being a baby face… as a baby face, it was like, ‘Oh, you don’t want to sound like a heel. You don’t want to talk like that.’… But now I have a reason to be mad, and now I have a reason to talk the way I wanna talk to, whoever I wanna talk to… I will say this, I think genuinely, people might be a little afraid. You ever notice that I’m the one who’s the promo, and yet I haven’t been able to cut promos. Why do you think that is? …That is genuinely how I feel. Why? Because… you had Zelina, who is the one who would literally decimate every single person on the roster down to an ant size. Like, that’s the person that you don’t give a microphone to.”
Zelina Vega lost the United States Championship to Giulia on June 27th.
