It looks like WWE has dropped their biggest hint that The Undertaker might not be retired. As we’ve talked about on the site, WWE has never officially said that The Undertaker has retired and they seem to be leaving the door open for his return. Remember, there was no official “goodbye” on the night after WrestleMania and the announcers have been instructed not to say that he is retired. Instead, whenever The Undertaker’s name comes up, Michael Cole make sure to include lines like “if he really is retired” as a way to keep things open ended. That might be because Taker did now know for sure if he was done wrestling. In previous years, he has told people privately that he was done but months later he would start to feel better and would change his mind. That is what happened last year after his match with Shane McMahon.
During a recent live event in Singapore, Roman Reigns got on the microphone and said, “if The Dead Man wants to find The Big Dog, he knows exactly where to find me.” Reigns said this mid-match while he was competing against Bray Wyatt and fans started to chant for The Undertaker.
This could have just been Reigns going into business for himself but there are definitely signs pointing to The Undertaker’s return, at least for one final match. Back in May, photos surfaced of Taker in New York City and the speculation online was that he was finally getting the much-needed hip replacement surgery. He looked to be in a lot of pain but, as recently as last week, he seemed to be doing better.
So, if The Undertaker is going to wrestle again, then when would the match take place? Dave Meltzer reported this week that there have been changes made to the plans for the top matches at SummerSlam (click here for more on that story). The original plans for WrestleMania were for Reigns to challenge Brock Lesnar but it’s looking like the Reigns vs. Lesnar match will take place at SummerSlam. If that is the case, then it frees up Reigns for a rematch with Taker at Mania and, perhaps, if Reigns is the champion then it could be a title vs. career match. That is just some fantasy booking on my part but I can definitely see them wanting to give The Undertaker a proper send-off.
