As noted earlier this week, Triple H is now in charge of 205 Live after Vince McMahon made the decision to step aside. The idea for Drake Maverick as the General Manager is not to be a gimmick. He will be a straight shooter, much like Gorilla Monsoon or Jack Tunney years before Mr. McMahon was introduced as the evil authority figure. If you’ve watched the last 2 weeks of 205 Live then you’ve probably noticed that Maverick has been portrayed as someone with credibility and not an overbearing character like Stephanie McMahon or other GM’s that they’ve used in the past.
Dave Meltzer wrote this week that the idea for a credible GM dates back several months. The problem was that McMahon’s mentality was that there was not enough personality development and storyline and that is the first priority to him ahead of having great matches.
Like I said before, there is still a problem with the lack of reaction from fans during 205 Live. Most of the fans that are there bought tickets to Smackdown Live and they are not tuning into the WWE Network each week to keep up with 205 Live. If they moved the show to a more intimate setting like Full Sail University in front of a hot crowd then the show would come off so much better on TV.
This week’s show featured an awesome match between Hideo Itami and Roderick Strong. You could argue that it was the best match in 205 Live history but the fans were largely quiet.
The video below is a sign of the changes being made to the brand. As you can see, this is part of their attempt to strip away the goofy storylines:
