The latest news on a potential WWE return for Rey Mysterio

For those of you wondering about Rey Mysterio’s WWE status after the news that he has made a deal with Aro Lucha…well, things still appear to be on course as far as WWE talks go. The story in The Tennessean about Rey Mysterio buying into the new Aro Lucha promotion is overblown, according to Dave Meltzer on Sunday’s Wrestling Observer Radio. Mysterio has an option to buy in but he hasn’t done so yet.

As far as his talks with WWE, those are still ongoing. My guess is that if he does sign a new WWE deal then we wouldn’t see him back until sometime after WrestleMania. There were never any plans for Mysterio vs. Cena at Mania, despite what has been reported elsewhere. Mysterio has said publicly that he does not want to wrestle a full-time schedule because he wants to have time for outside projects and he wants to continue training his son.

As we noted earlier, Aro Lucha is looking to start a crowdfunding campaign that would allow fans to buy a piece of the company. Their goal is to eventually get a TV deal. It sounds to me like they want to use Mysterio’s name as a way to gain some leverage on business deals. It certainly helps to have someone like Mysterio as part of your promotion when you are trying to secure a television deal. It will be tough because, unless you are WWE, cable networks are not paying much money for wrestling. Impact Wrestling is on a barter deal with Pop TV and Lucha Underground has lost millions of dollars on the El Rey Network. ROH has television but the stations are owned by their parent company.
