In today’s WWE, World Championship matches are no longer guaranteed the main event slot of a Monday Night RAW, SmackDown Live or pay-per-view (PPV) – and that’s something that doesn’t sit well with former Intercontinental Champion The Miz.
Miz recently spoke to the Gorilla Position podcast and offered his thoughts on the matter. Specifically, he discussed the Backlash pay-per-view (PPV) that occurred this past May. The Universal Championship wasn’t defended on the card, and AJ Styles successfully defended his WWE Title on the sixth match of the eight bouts on the main card when he went to a Draw with Shinsuke Nakamura.
The main event of the evening? A cross-branded one-on-one non-title match between Roman Reigns and Samoa Joe. Miz said that he didn’t have a problem with Reigns main eventing the show, but he is upset that the World Title doesn’t main event shows anymore:
“I was upset that the championship wasn’t [in the main event], it wasn’t that Roman Reigns was in the main event. It was the championship. When I look at championships and the Universal Championship isn’t there, I think the WWE or Universal Championships should be in the main event at all times.
“The reason being is that’s the most prestigious title, supposedly. It’s supposed to be the most prestigious and honorable title in WWE even though when I had the Intercontinental Championship, I made it that.”
