Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov set for UFC 229

The Notorious Conor McGregor is returning to the Octagon. It was announced at the UFC 25th anniversary press conference on Friday that McGregor (21-3) would be returning to challenge Khabib Nurmagomedov (26-0) for the lightweight championship at UFC 229 taking place on October 9 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Dana White announced it at the very end of the press conference. The fans and press hoped to see a stare-down but White said that both men were not in town. There will be plenty of time for stare-downs and trash talking over the next couple of months.

McGregor hasn’t fought in the Octagon since November 12, 2016 and there were questions about his future after his massive payday for last year’s boxing match against Floyd Mayweather. However, this fight was a no-brainer because they have been feuding for over a year, including the now-infamous incident that took place in the loading dock of the Barclays Center a few months ago.

Nurmagomedov became interim champion at UFC 223 in April after McGregor was stripped of the title.
