It’s been more than 8 years since Shawn Michaels retired from the wrestling ring but fans still wonder if there’s a chance he’ll ever return for one more WrestleMania dream match. Michaels addressed the idea of another match over the weekend during an interview with Inside The Ropes.
“I always try to explain to people. So if you take me at the younger version and put me in the ring with one of those guys, of course, it would be a blast. But at the same time I’d like to be a younger version of me and being in the ring with Harley Race and Buddy Rogers but none of those things can really happen in real life. That’s the thing I always try to tell people.”
Michaels said that he’s guilty of not really wanting to work for a living but what he is doing now at the WWE Performance Center is not really work for him. Triple H joked that it took a lot to get Michaels to take the job at the PC.
“The getting ready for [wrestling] is 100% work and I don’t want to put myself or my family through that to do again. Again, to go out there and try steal the show at 53 for God’s sake. Now it’s a whole different ball of wax is somebody says, ‘do you two wanna go down and work with some other 40 plus-year-old guys or 50 or whatever and mess around and be silly.’ You know what I mean? That doesn’t seem like work to me. So it’s stuff like that I would consider. Nobody ever even talks about that, it’s always me and somebody half my age.” Michaels said that it’s “neat in theory.”
Triple H talked about the fantasy booking aspect of it but sometimes you can’t pull it off and sometimes something is set up to fail.
“Let’s just say I did it and the match was phenomenal. The reality is this hairline is still what it is…the match could be phenomenal but you’re still gonna bust my chops..” Michaels said that fans want him to look like he did in 1996 and that’s never going to happen because father time waits on no man.
“[There is] a lot of stuff and what do you do and even does the young guy — does he benefit that much really when everything is said and done. I don’t know, it just seems like more trouble than it’s worth.”
