The biggest story from the weekend is Kenny Omega announcing that he is done with New Japan Pro Wrestling at the end of this month when his contract expires.
On Monday’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported that New Japan Pro Wrestling’s belief as of a few days ago was that they were still in the running to keep him and Chris Jericho on board. Meltzer heard rumblings before last week that Omega would likely be leaving the company. Jericho is a free agent but he would only work a handful of dates even if he signs a new deal with NJPW so it’s a big blow to lose Omega.
At this point, there is still no word on where Omega will land. There is a big money offer from WWE but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he will want to go there. He did state in a 2017Â interview that one thing he would love is a WrestleMania match with AJ Styles but nothing in WWE is guaranteed. In fact, Lashley was told that a match at last year’s SummerSlam was on the table and the match never took place.
There have been all sorts of crazy rumors about Omega making the rounds in the last week. One rumor claimed that WWE was offering creative control. Meltzer quickly shot that story down.
“They’re not offering him creative control,” Meltzer said. “They don’t offer anyone creative control.”
Tomorrow night’s AEW rally in Jacksonville could be when we find out some more on Omega’s future or perhaps we will have to wait until the end of the month when his NJPW deal expires.
