Tommaso Ciampa retained NXT Championship at TakeOver: Phoenix

NXT TakeOver: Phoenix capped off an excellent night of action with the NXT Championship match between Tommaso Ciampa and Aleister Black.

A few minutes into the match, Black tweaked his knee at ringside so Ciampa worked on the knee throughout the match. Late in the match, Ciampa ripped the padding to expose the cement floor. Black took over on offense and hit the Black Mass but Ciampa was able to turn his shoulder around to avoid being pinned.

Ciampa came back with the draping DDT and the Fairytale Ending but Black was able to kick out before the 3-count. It was the second time he kicked out of that move and that left Ciampa with a shocked look on his face. Ciampa tried it again but he didn’t try to go for the cover. He tried to hit it again but Black hit the Black Mass but his knee buckled. Ciampa hit the Fairytale Ending and then pinned Black to retain.

Ciampa posed on the stage with the title in his hand. Johnny Gargano walked out with the North American Championship and he posed alongside Ciampa.
