Former WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio to face Tito Ortiz in MMA fight for Combate Americas

Several weeks ago, there were rumors about a potential MMA fight between former UFC/Bellator star Tito Ortiz and former WWE star Alberto Del Rio.

People in the company denied those rumors at the time but the fight was confirmed today by Combate Americas CEO Campbell McLaren.

During an interview with the Generacion MMA YouTube channel, McLaren confirmed that the fight will take place. He did not provide a date but it’s worth noting that Ortiz has said that he planned on fighting this year. Presumably, this would air on pay-per-view with Ortis/Del Rio as the main event.

“I’ll probably be fighting in October,” Ortiz told TMZ. “After I fought Chuck last year I thought it would probably be my last one, but my body is intact, everything is fast, everything is great. Sparring’s been good, training’s been great, and so let’s do one more for fun.”

Ortiz is signed with the promotion under a multi-fight deal. It’s unknown what Del Rio’s fight deal is but he is also signed as the president of the promotion in 2016.

Del Rio, a former WWE Champion, has not competed in Mixed Martial Arts since 2010. The 42-year old fought for promotions such as DEEP and PRIDE. He also has an amateur wrestling background as part of the Mexican national team.
