In the main event of WWE NXT TakeOver: Portland, Adam Cole put up his NXT Championship against Tommaso Ciampa.
This was a long match. At one point, there was a scary looking wheelbarrow spot that had Ciampa landing with his back on the edge of the announcer’s table. It looked like he protected his neck, which is obviously good news.
Several minutes later, Ciampa powerbombed Cole through the announcer’s table but the table didn’t break so he did it again and then the table broke. Back in the ring, Ciampa almost won with the Project Ciampa but Cole kicked out of the pin attempt.
Very late in the match, Cole tried the Panama Sunrise on the edge of the ring but Ciampa reversed into the Air Raid crash. Moments later, Cole was finally able to hit the Panama Sunrise on the floor at ringside but Ciampa hit a DDT out of nowhere as Cole was getting in the ring. Ciampa hit the Fairytale Ending but Cole kicked out of the pin attempt and there was a huge reaction from the crowd. Cole locked in a crossface but Ciampa reversed into his own crossface but Cole made it to the bottom rope.
Roderick Strong ran down to ringside to distract the referee while Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish attacked Ciampa. However, Ciampa was able to kick out of Cole’s pin attempt. Ciampa took out TUE at ringside. Cole tried to use the belt but Ciampa reversed, Ciampa was shoved into the referee and things got worse for Ciampa. Cole hit a low blow and he went for a move off the second rope but Ciampa hit a low blow and Fairytale Ending but the referee was knocked out at ringside so no pin attempt was possible. Johnny Gargano went to ringside and he took the belt away from Ciampa before he could use it and then nailed Ciampa with it. Cole covered Ciampa for the win.
