John Cena addresses his WrestleMania 37 status

John Cena has obviously taken a step back from WWE as he’s considered to be a part-time star as he focuses on his acting career.

It was reported last month that WWE was working on the top four matches for WrestleMania 37 and the likes of Goldberg and John Cena are considered to be nearly locks for the show. This came after Cena was featured in the “WrestleMania Report” video that was posted by WWE to announce the date and location for WrestleMania 37.

The former WWE Champion did an interview with Sports Illustrated to promote a commercial that will air during the Super Bowl this Sunday as he will be part of the advertisement for Mountain Dew’s newest flavor, Major Melon.

In this interview, he laughed at his past stance of being against part-time stars coming back to take away spots from full-time wrestlers on the card of WrestleMania.

“What a hypocritical situation. I used to be very open about the fact that part-timers were just that, and here I am at 44 years old and I’ve become what I despise, as they say. That is kind of what it is.”

Cena is currently filming HBO’s “Peacemaker” series. He noted that him working on the project, he called it a letter of regulation, will prevent him from working at WrestleMania.

“It’s a wonderful episodic show, and it’s an amazing opportunity,” he says. “It’s a challenge I wanted, and I get to work with awesome people. James Gunn is writing and directing, which is amazing, and it’s something I couldn’t pass up. It’s very difficult to say because I know it’s going to be disappointing for a lot of people, but according to the letter of regulation right now, there is no mathematical way I can be at WrestleMania this year.”

While you can take Cena’s word as is and rightfully so, it’s still very early. In the world of WWE, you can never rule out anything. It’s possible that Cena could still make an appearance whether that’s in-person or via a pre-recorded video.
