Davey Boy Smith Jr. is back with WWE as he made his return before the SmackDown episode from Houston, Texas at the Toyota Center. Since that time, he has been working dark matches as a tag team with Austin Theory.
It was previously reported that Smith was signed as early as late March or early April. The news wasn’t announced because the two sides wanted to keep the signing quiet until the timing was right for him to officially return to the company.
Smith also confirmed in an interview that when he first started talking with WWE about a potential return, the plan called for him to go to the NXT UK brand.
Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Smith would’ve been a top babyface in NXT UK to feud with its top champion WALTER for the title. However, the COVID-19 pandemic changed that.
Per the report, WWE Head of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis recruited him heavily and pushed hard for him to be on the main roster. Vince McMahon made the call to put him on SmackDown. Smith has yet to make his TV return.
