Following CM Punk’s announcement about his injury, it was announced that CM Punk has not vacated his title but an interim champion will be crowned later this month.
This Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite will kick off with a battle royal and the winner of that match will wrestle number 1 contender Jon Moxley at the Forbidden Door pay-per-view on June 26. The winner of the match at the pay-per-view will become the interim AEW World Champion and there will be a unification match at a later date when Punk returns from his injury.
During his speech on Rampage, Punk said that he has a broken bone and will need surgery. He was limping on Dynamite and tonight on Rampage so it seems as if the injury is to his foot. There was no word given on a return timetable. Punk was scheduled to face Hiroshi Tanahashi on that show but obviously, they will have to figure out a new match.
UPDATE: The battle royal winner will face Moxley in the main event this Wednesday and the winner of that match will challenge for the interim title at Forbidden Door.
