AEW star is working without a contract

Brian Cage finds himself in an interesting spot as he is technically a free agent despite being a champion in ROH.

As previously reported, it was believed that Cage’s deal with AEW/ROH had expired going into last Friday’s ROH Supercard of Honor event where The Embassy (Cage, Kaun, and Toa Liona) defended their Six-Man Tag Team Titles against AR Fox, Blake Christian, and Metalik, but he agreed to work the show anyway.

Many expected Cage to finish up at the show and then explore his options. The Embassy kept the titles, leading to speculation that Cage may have agreed to a new deal or a short-term extension.

That’s not the case, as he currently doesn’t have a deal. Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported today that Cage’s agreement to work with AEW/ROH expired at midnight following the event. He agreed to work through the show, and AEW is now trying to sign him to a new deal.

They’ve offered him a long-term deal as well as made attempts to get him to sign a short-term extension. Tony Khan said during the post-Supercard of Honor media scrum that he wanted Cage to remain with the promotion for a long time.

The report noted that the two sides had had productive conversations, and the talks are ongoing.

The promotion has reportedly made attempts to extend his deal due to the time he missed because of injury, dating back to when he first signed with them. However, Cage has pushed up on that.

Some powerful names in AEW have pushed for him to re-sign with the promotion, while there have also been “powerful members of the WWE roster who were hoping he’d end up there.”
