AEW Star to Challenge for NJPW Strong Openweight Title at Independence Day Event

AEW will have a presence at the upcoming NJPW Strong Independence Day event next month.

The promotion will hold the two-night event on July 4 and July 5. The first two matches have been confirmed for the show, with Catch 2/2 (TJP & Francesco Akira) defending the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Titles against Clark Connors & Dan Moloney on the first night.

The second night will see AEW star Eddie Kingston challenge KENTA for the Strong Openweight Title.

The top AEW/ROH star hasn’t worked a match since losing to ROH World Champion Claudio Castagnoli on March 31 at the Supercard of Honor pay-per-view.

Other stars advertised for the show include The DKC, Rocky Romero, Alex Zayne, Tom Lawlor, JR Kratos, Royce Isaacs, Jorel Nelson, Bad Dude Tito, Alex Coughlin, Gabriel Kidd, Lance Archer, and more.

Kingston will compete in the NJPW G1 Climax 33 tournament, which starts on June 15 and ends on August 13. Kingston has been sidelined for the last few months after undergoing hernia surgery.
