Nigel McGuinness on Why He Believes Vince Russo Changed His Name to Desmond Wolfe in TNA

In an exclusive for WrestlingNews.co, Steve Fall spoke with former ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness. He discussed signing with AEW, TNA, ROH and more. Scroll down to watch the interview and for details on his magic show that is part of Progress Wrestling’s Super Strong Style weekend on Sunday, May 28th.

On Vince Russo creating the name Desmond Wolfe in TNA:

“I would assume it was a copyright thing because I own the copyrights to Nigel McGuinness, so I think a lot of times TNA or IMPACT, I can’t remember which one it was at the time. I can’t remember how many sides the ring had either for that matter. It wasn’t relevant either way.

He continued, “The truth is, I think they just wanted to own the name so they christened Desmond Wolfe. I’m not sure who it came from or where it came from. I think perhaps Vince Russo. That’s an urban myth. I never got Vince to back that up. He used to own a video store from what I understand before he got into wrestling. There was a cult British movie called ‘With Nail and I’. It’s a classic movie. You should go your way to see it. It’s about two aspiring actors in England at the turn of the 60s, becoming 70s, at the end of 1969 and these two aspiring actors who are destitute and poor. They’re drinking any alcohol they can get their hands on. One of them says, ‘When I make it, I’m going to be known as Desmond Wolf’, and so I think perhaps maybe that was the inspiration.”
