Samoa Joe to Defend AEW World Championship Against Eddie Kingston at Winter Is Coming
AEW CEO Tony Khan has officially announced the main event for the upcoming Winter Is Coming special edition of AEW Dynamite. On Wednesday, December 10, Samoa Joe will defend the AEW World Championship against Eddie Kingston.
The match was made official following the events of the special Thanksgiving edition of AEW Collision. Kingston secured the title opportunity after defeating Katsuyori Shibata in a hard-hitting contest. Following his victory over Shibata, who is a fellow member of Joe’s “The Opps” faction, Kingston delivered an impassioned promo challenging the champion directly.
“The Mad King” Wants the Crown
Kingston’s road to this title shot has been paved with personal hurdles. During his post-match address on Collision, he spoke candidly about his recent struggles, referencing an 18-month injury layoff and admitting that he finds no peace in his life outside of the ring. While referencing the recent betrayal by HOOK at Full Gear, Kingston chose to focus his immediate attention on the “Head of the Snake,” Samoa Joe, rather than getting sidetracked by his former ally’s decisions.
“I don’t have a beef with HOOK… HOOK is still my boy,” Kingston said, emphasizing that his issue lies with Joe’s corruption of his friend.
A Historic Champion
Samoa Joe enters Winter Is Coming riding a wave of momentum. He recently solidified his dominance by defeating “Hangman” Adam Page at AEW Full Gear to become a double champion, a feat partially accomplished through the shocking assistance of HOOK. Joe currently holds both the AEW World Championship and is recognized as a World Trios Champion alongside his stablemates in The Opps.
The high-stakes title fight is set to take place live from Atlanta, Georgia, broadcasting on TBS and HBO Max at 8 p.m. ET.
