AEW World Title To Be Defended In Eight-Man Clockwork Carnage Match At WrestleDream In Orlando

The AEW World Championship will be defended in an eight-man Clockwork Carnage match at WrestleDream on Saturday, October 17, in Orlando.

Tony Schiavone announced the match on Saturday’s Collision, and AEW posted the rules on its social media accounts afterward. Schiavone said the match came out of a conversation between Tony Khan and AEW World Champion Will Ospreay.

“Tony Khan, he went to Will Ospreay, said you’ve made so many dreams come true for fans around the world, what would be your dream match if you’re still the world champion, your dream match going into WrestleDream,” Schiavone said. “And Will thought about this and he called upon his experiences in one of Tony Khan’s great creations here in AEW and that is called the Casino Gauntlet Match.”

Ospreay won the first two Casino Gauntlet matches AEW held. Schiavone said Ospreay told Khan, “Tony, I’ll work with you in coming up with this very unique match.” Pro Wrestling EVE, the British promotion where Ospreay runs creative, held the first Clockwork Carnage match on Friday in London.

How Clockwork Carnage works

The match has eight wrestlers and two stages.

  • Two wrestlers, chosen at random, start the match. Every three minutes another randomly selected wrestler enters until all eight are in.
  • During that entry stage, any wrestler who is pinned or submits is eliminated. The field can be smaller than eight by the time the last entrant arrives.
  • Once the eighth wrestler enters, everyone still in the match begins a 15-minute scoring period. Every pinfall or submission in those 15 minutes counts as one fall, and a wrestler can score more than once.
  • When time expires, the wrestler with the most falls wins the match and the championship.

In EVE’s version, a new entrant came in every two minutes. AEW lengthened the interval to three.

Who’s in it

Ospreay is the only confirmed entrant. The other seven spots are being filled through qualifying matches. The first is Samoa Joe vs. Jack Perry at Grand Slam France on Tuesday, October 6, in Paris.

Ospreay also defends the title against Kazuchika Okada in Paris. If Okada wins, he would go into Clockwork Carnage as champion.

WrestleDream card so far

  • Clockwork Carnage for the AEW World Championship: Will Ospreay (c) vs. seven wrestlers to be determined
  • Mercedes Moné (c) vs. Thekla for the AEW Women’s World Championship
  • The Young Bucks (c) vs. Kevin Knight and Kyle Fletcher for the AEW World Tag Team Championship

Moné won the title from Willow Nightingale at All In: London on August 30 and Thekla earned the shot by beating Nightingale at All Out on September 26. Moné has not wrestled since All In after breaking her nose in that match.

Two of the three champions defend in Paris first. Ospreay faces Okada at Grand Slam France on October 6, and Moné faces Queen Aminata on the same show, so either title could change hands before WrestleDream.
