Backstage News On Swerve Strickland’s AEW Absence

Swerve Strickland’s recent absence from AEW television has an explanation. According to Fightful Select, Strickland recently filmed promotional materials for Warner Bros. Discovery, though the specifics of what was produced have not been confirmed. The report explains why Strickland has not been seen on AEW programming in several weeks and why he was absent from AEW Dynasty on April 12 in Vancouver.

Strickland last appeared on AEW television in late March, losing to Kenny Omega on Dynamite. That match carried significant weight in the AEW championship picture, as Omega’s victory came with his EVP position on the line and secured him the AEW World Championship shot against MJF at Dynasty.

Omega ultimately came up short in that main event, with MJF retaining the title. Fightful reported that Strickland was not scheduled for Dynasty and was instead at a signing on the day of the pay-per-view. The Warner Bros. Discovery connection is notable given that AEW’s television programming airs on TBS and TNT, both of which fall under the WBD umbrella.

Strickland has been one of AEW’s top performers over the past two years, having held the AEW World Championship in 2024 before losing it to MJF. No additional details regarding the nature of the promotional work have been confirmed at this time.
