Brian Cage Responds To The Criticism Big Men Face In Wrestling

Brian Cage has addressed the unique criticism he faces as a muscular powerhouse who can also fly around the ring, and he shared a memorable compliment from Mick Foley along the way.

Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Cage explained that fans often hold his physique against him, even as his athleticism is what made him stand out in the first place. “When I first started doing that, that is what really stood out and got me over, especially in PWG,” Cage said. “They see me and they’re like, ‘All right, this guy’s awful,’ and then they see me work, and it’s like, ‘Holy crap, this is insane.'”

Cage recalled a moment at a WrestleMania weekend wedding officiated by Foley, where the hardcore legend offered him high praise. “He looks at me and goes, ‘Man, Brian, anyone who looked like you never made it back in my day, and if they did make it, they weren’t good,'” Cage said. “He goes, ‘Not only are you good, then you can do stuff in the ring that nobody your build can do. You are one of a kind, definitely cut from a different cloth.'”

Cage also pushed back on the idea that his high-flying style isn’t believable for a man his size, arguing that his moves are pure athleticism rather than cooperative spots. “When I flip over the top rope to my feet, that’s just me being physically, athletically gifted enough to do that. No one’s helping me do that,” he said. “So that should be celebrated.”

He did acknowledge one area for growth, admitting that he can be too selfless in the ring by giving and taking too much in pursuit of the best possible match.
