John Layfield believes Mike Santana is headed for WWE’s main roster, and he explained why depth of talent is so crucial for a company running as much programming as WWE does.
Speaking on Something to Wrestle, JBL addressed Santana’s rumored WWE move after he recently lost the World Championship to Nic Nemeth at Slammiversary. JBL sees Santana thriving at the top level. “I think Santana will be a great fit on the main roster,” he said.
Explaining his reasoning, JBL pointed to the sheer volume of television WWE produces and the toll it takes on creative. “When you have as many shows as WWE has, they have about 1,000 hours of programming a week. They have wrestling on every freaking night. You need a lot of talent, and you need a lot of deep talent,” JBL said.
The Hall of Famer recalled how a lack of depth strained WWE when SmackDown launched alongside Raw, forcing top stars to appear everywhere.
“When we first started up Monday Night Raw, and then SmackDown in the same week, people wanted to see all the stars on both shows, so you had to put Steve on shows, put Rock on shows, put Undertaker on both shows,” JBL said. “We were burning through storylines at light speed. Something that should take you five or six months was taking us one to three months.”
