Matt Hardy has shared his prediction on Mick Foley’s AEW future, telling The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy that he believes Foley will become a regular returning character on AEW TV beyond Sunday’s Double or Nothing Buy In co-host role, and that MJF is the only wrestler in AEW who could plausibly get a retirement match out of Foley if one ever happens.
Foley was officially announced by Tony Khan as the Double or Nothing Buy In co-host alongside Renee Paquette earlier this week. Foley has not wrestled since 2012 and turned down an MJF-pitched six-week retirement program in past years due to his ongoing hip and knee replacement concerns.
“I don’t know, I am not confident. Is it possible? Yes. Do I think Mick Foley is going to be a regular returning character on AEW TV? I do. I think that will happen. I’m pretty confident about that, because once again, Mick Foley, if you can’t find a spot to put him on your roster when he’s never been there before, and put him in a beneficial role where he can bring viewers and attract attention, and you know, utilize as a household name, as he is, then you’re missing out, and I totally think he’s up for doing that, because he still is in the loop of like wanting to go out and work and do cons and do this and do that, like there’s a part of him that takes pride in that, so I definitely think he’ll be a reoccurring character on AEW television.”
Hardy thinks Foley is a casual-fan magnet for AEW.
“Mick Foley brings a massive fan base with him, which would be majorly beneficial for AEW. Mick Foley, an icon in pro wrestling, a legend.”
A possible MJF match was discussed. “As far as a match, I don’t know, I don’t know what his health is, per se, I don’t know, but like you said, the thing you said Max had pitched earlier to have something on TV, I have five weeks wrote out, or whatever it was, if something was going to happen, I could, I could see it point to being that. If it was, and once again, that’s all dependent on how his health is, how he feels, and what he’s willing to do.”
When asked if he would be interested in seeing it, “Yes, I would definitely be interested.”
Hardy then named MJF specifically as the only wrestler in AEW who could pull a Foley retirement match off.
“There is no better heel in AEW than MJF, like he is fucking great at what he does, and he is committed. He has relinquished, fully relinquished, his fear of being an asshole, and that is one of the reasons I do respect his work so much. And he is so talented and athletic enough, and young, and in his prime that he, he could fucking work with a pogo stick and turn it into a good match. I mean, that’s where he’s at. And if you were going to do something back and forth, the emotion between those two would be magnificent. And there’s also that same thing about they’re from the same area, you know, there’s some pretty amazing backstory that could go along with it. I mean, you could dig deep into into things and really create some great content there, but, but who knows, we’ll see. And, and when it is all said and done, Mick Foley is a huge name, he’s a household name who has a huge following and a huge fan base, who casuals know, and it would bring eyeballs to AEW.”
MJF has used recent media appearances to publicly call Foley “fat and ugly” and describe him as “the blueprint of what Darby Allin is now.”
