Fans have been remembering Jay Briscoe following the news of his passing in a car accident this past Tuesday night.
Jay, alongside his brother Mark as The Briscoes, had numerous classic matches with teams such as The Young Bucks, The Hardy Boyz, and most recently, FTR. However, they never worked in AEW.
Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite featured a graphic at the start of the show while many stars wore black armbands for their matches, but it was not a tribute show like they did for Brodie Lee.
As previously reported, AEW wasn’t allowed by Warner Bros. Discovery to do a tribute show to Jay because of his past homophobic tweets a decade ago. He apologized for the tweets over the years. This is why The Briscoes were never signed by AEW nor used on AEW programming for ROH storylines because Warner Bros. Discovery didn’t want him used by AEW.
Fans had hoped Khan would use The Briscoes in AEW when he bought ROH, but that didn’t happen, and it wasn’t due to Khan not trying.
According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Khan made a few attempts to get the Briscoes on AEW television.
Meltzer wrote, “This past year there were many attempts to get them on the show. They were actually flown in a few times to television, but they weren’t allowed to be used. There were plans for them on the 9/4 All Out show in Chicago, to be in a six-man tag with FTR & Wardlow vs. The Briscoes & Jay Lethal. But without being able to promote it on television and because the broadcast partners didn’t want them on AEW broadcasts, the decision was made to bring the Motor City Machine Guns in out of nowhere to team with Lethal.”
Jay’s daughters are in stable condition after the unthinkable car wreck that took his life.
